Geary FFA Walks for Cure
This year the Geary FFA officer team took on a personal project for the officers. The Ripley FFA chapter started an event called Project Women in which they set out to raise funds for the organization Project Women that will assist women diagnosed with cancer who do not have the funds or transportation to see a doctor or receive the proper treatment needed to fight their cancer. The Ripley chapter FFA wanted to see how many FFA chapters could raise money to donaate to this organization and then asked each chapter to walk a certain amount of miles to help raise awareness in the fight against cancer.
The FFA officers started this campaign at the end of September and by the middle of October with the help of the Geary community and family members had raised over $1500 to donate to Project Women. Then on Sunday, April 29, the FFA officer team met at the Douglas High School track to participate in the walking portion of this event. Originally FFA chapters were asked to just walk a total of 8 miles. But FFA members T.J. Buser, Quentin Shelton, Michelle Helm, Kalep Mooney and Marshall Mathews along with Mr. Drake and Hailey and Britton Drake decided that the eight miles were not enough and originally were going to do 16 miles. By the time all were done walking, they had covered a total of 24 miles---three times the original goal set for the chapter. Each member commented how nice it was to participate and exceed the expectations set for them and to help and be part of a great cause.
