Wilson Pumps Up Spirit at Elementary Assembly
Elementary P.E. teacher Steve Wilson does more than just award the P.E. spirit stick to the best-behaved class at Friday morning assemblies. He also entertains students by wearing a variety of costumes and athletic uniforms and telling humorous stories.
Wilson said he first wore a football helmet "because I just wanted the kids to have fun on a Friday morning." Wilson remarked, "One student asked me later what I planned to do to top that one next week, and it started a tradition to dress up in something different every Friday." Since then Wilson has portrayed many characters including a bearded backwoodsman named Jedidiah, a Mariachi band member, hockey player, baseball fan spilling popcorn on students, drummer in a marching band, and even a surprise visitor hidden in a box. Most recently Wilson wore a wrestler's singlet and head gear and challenged his friend and fellow teacher, Dillon Jung, to a wrestling match. Wilson also entertains students with humorous stories that involve the costumed character he's portraying.
Wilson's Friday morning presentations have gained him many fans. Among them is fifth grader Lanson Pratt who commented, "The costumes he wears are really funny. Everyone in our class really likes what he does."
